Social media update

Superintendent's Update

Dear Allegan Public Schools community:

This morning, several students and community members reported that an Allegan High School student posted concerning imagery and language to social media that made them uncomfortable and caused concern for the safety of the building. While there was no mention of Allegan, any school, or any individuals, the threatening and violent nature of the post rightfully caused concern. Police were called to assist in conducting a thorough investigation of the post, and it was quickly determined that while the social media post was very inappropriate,  there was not a safety issue. While the investigation has determined that the language used in the post was from a video game and originated off campus, the post has caused a substantial disruption to the learning environment which places the behavior under the disciplinary jurisdiction of the school.

Any comment(s) that could be considered threatening in any way will be taken seriously, and disciplinary action will be taken according to our handbook and/or the law. We are focused on maintaining a safe and respectful school environment. Anyone who makes these types of statements may face expulsion from Allegan Public Schools in addition to criminal prosecution. Comments that are intended to be a joke or prank do not absolve a student from the serious consequences that may occur.

We want to commend our students and families who spoke up after seeing these concerning posts, and we continue to encourage all of our students to report an event when it causes concern. While an immediate report of behavior to the school is best, Allegan Public Schools also participates in OK2SAY, a confidential tip line to report any concerns regarding criminal activity or potential harm related to our students, staff, or schools. Tips through OK2SAY can be submitted 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We need to work together to keep our students, staff, and schools safe.

Our administrative team is thankful for our partnership with local law enforcement in managing the safety of our students, staff, and schools, and we appreciate all of you for your continued support of Allegan Public Schools.
