Standard Response Protocols

In cooperation with local first responders, county emergency management, and the Michigan Office of School Safety, Allegan Public Schools has adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) for school emergencies.

Developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation, the SRP uses clear common language to explain five specific actions that can be taken during an emergency:

HOLD

STUDENTS are trained to:

  • Clear the hallways and remain in their area or room until the “All Clear” is announced
  • Do business as usual

ADULTS and STAFF are trained to:

  • Close and lock the door
  • Account for students and adults
  • Do business as usual
SECURE

SECURE

“Get inside. Lock outside doors.”

STUDENTS are trained to:

  • Return to inside of building
  • Do business as usual

ADULTS and STAFF are trained to:

  • Bring everyone indoors
  • Lock the outside doors
  • Increase situational awareness
  • Account for students and adults
  • Do business as usual
LOCKDOWN

LOCKDOWN

“Locks, lights, out of sight”

STUDENTS are trained to:

  • Move away from sight
  • Maintain silence
  • Do not open the door

ADULTS and STAFF are trained to:

  • Recover students from hallway if possible
  • Lock the classroom door
  • Turn out the lights
  • Move away from sight
  • Maintain silence
  • Do not open the door
  • Prepare to evade or defend
EVACUATE

EVACUATE

“To a location”

STUDENTS are trained to:

  • Leave stuff behind if required to
  • If possible, bring their phone
  • Follow instructions

ADULTS and STAFF are trained to:

  • Bring roll sheet and Go Bag (unless instructed not to bring anything with then, dependent on reason for evacuation)
  • Lead students to evacuation location
  • Account for students and adults
SHELTER

SHELTER

“State hazard and safety strategy”

HAZARDS might include:

  • Tornado
  • Hazmat
  • Earthquake

SAFETY STRATEGIES might include:

  • Evacuate to shelter area
  • Seal the room
  • Drop, cover, and hold

STUDENTS are trained in:

  • Appropriate hazards and safety strategies

ADULTS and STAFF are trained in:

  • Appropriate hazards and safety strategies
  • Accounting for students and adults

The shift to the SRP ensures our emergency actions and language are consistent with neighboring school districts, local law enforcement, and emergency responders. This shared approach helps first responders quickly understand the type and status of any emergency, leading to clearer communication and faster, more effective action.

Safety Drills

Allegan Public Schools complies with the State of Michigan School Safety Requirements. These include a number of drills throughout the year.

Fire Drills (5 required)

Students and parents are encouraged to review our Student Technology Handbook, which explains the District’s technology use policies and answers questions you may have. Students and parents are required to sign a Technology Acceptable Use Policy Agreement prior to being given access to our network or a school computer.

Tornado Drills (2 required)

Procedures:

  • Students are evacuated from the building.
  • Students and staff proceed to designated assembly location.
  • Attendance is taken to ensure all students are present.
  • Students and staff remain in designated assembly are until “All Clear” is given.

Lockdown Drills (3 required)

Procedures:

  • Students are gathered inside the building, if outdoors.
  • Attendance is verified, if possible.
  • Students follow the directions of their teacher or principal.
  • During Lockdown: Hallways are evacuated. Students remain in classrooms with doors and windows shut and locked. Lights are turned off. All occupants are moved away from windows and doors (out of sight) until “All Clear” is given via intercom.

Additional information: At least one Lockdown Drill must occur during either lunch, recess, or some other time when a significant number of students are not in their classrooms.
