Dear APS families:
I want to inform you about a situation that occurred earlier today involving a former Allegan High School student who is currently enrolled in our Allegan Online program. Please know from the outset: all students were safe throughout the school day, and there is no ongoing danger to our schools.
Early this morning, Allegan law enforcement was alerted by federal authorities to a potential threat. Officers went to the student’s home, found credible evidence of a possible incident, and arrested the student. The arrest occurred prior to the start of the school day.
Federal authorities became aware of the situation after being alerted to concerning online conversations involving the student. That report was quickly relayed to our local law enforcement, leading to today’s swift response.
This individual remains in custody as law enforcement and the school district work together to complete the investigation while allowing any potential criminal proceedings—and the school disciplinary process—to unfold. Due to the investigation details still being finalized, this is all of the information that can be shared at this time.
We are deeply grateful to the Allegan City Police Department and their partners for their swift response and for ensuring the safety of our students and staff.
This situation also serves as a reminder that safety is a shared responsibility. In many cases, someone has prior knowledge of a potential threat. If you ever become aware of concerning behaviors, please contact local law enforcement, use the safety tools available on our website at https://alleganps.org/safety, or submit a confidential tip through the Michigan State Police’s OK2SAY program. Together, we can help prevent incidents before they occur.
The safety and well-being of our students remains our highest priority. We will continue to partner closely with law enforcement and remain vigilant in maintaining a safe learning environment.
