North Ward Elementary students celebrated March is Reading Month by “Reading across America.” Our students started in Maine learning about a lobster boil and ended in Hawaii with a Luau. The entire month of March was filled with daily activities for our students from wearing red, white and blue attire, to wearing hats and crazy socks. Students also had D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) time every Friday.
We exceeded our goal of 60,000 reading minutes by thousands of extra reading minutes. As a reward for working so hard, our students were invited to a Luau party with many fun luau activities. Hula hooping, pass the coconut, hula dancing and pineapple bowling were just some of the activities. Each student was also given a luau snack of pineapple and coconut. The students learned that working hard with a goal in mind deserves a celebration.
